Hi there! My name is Matthew Raymond Taylor, and I was born right here in the beautiful and culturally-rich city of Tucson, Arizona, making me a 7th generation Tucsonan. I am 20 years old, a little too young to be seeking public office, right? Actually, not at all! I am currently a Political Science student at Pima Community College. I am also currently a board member for the local non-profit “Tucson Pride”.
I attended the Sunnyside schools my entire life, and particularly enjoyed dancing in Sunnyside High School’s “Los Diablitos” folklorico group. I've been dancing folklorico since I was 5 years old. On the very first day of my junior year in high school, I was placed in the Arizona foster care system and that was the moment in my life that sparked the idea of serving my community. While I was in the system, I realized how under-resourced our schools were, negatively impacting the students that were in a similar situation as mine. Unfortunately, I was in a desperate time of need and due to the lack of resources for students like myself, I dropped out of high school shortly after, earning my GED as an alternative.
Now that I have persevered and overcome my own obstacles, I see it as my duty to serve on our Sunnyside school board to represent the unrepresented. It’s our time to fix the unfixed, it’s our time to speak the unspoken, and it’s our time to shine a brighter light on Sunnyside!
I am a loving, accepting, and dedicated Latino at heart, a heart which stands and belongs to this community.
